Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his escape.

Background on Conviction

He was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.
