A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its role in national works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
